The Kiwanis Club of Port Alberni received a $40,000 donation from the Co-op Community Spaces Program for improvements at Canal Waterfront Park.

Co-op is contributing up to $2 million in 2017 to help support projects that improve community’s park spaces across Western Canada.

Kiwanis president, Greg Holland, said the money will go towards building a sand volleyball court and other park improvements. He said the “first phase” of the improvement project will cost about $100,000, an amount they’ve received through donations.

On Sunday, June 25, the Kiwanis Club will be hosting a work party to begin cleaning up and improving the Canal Beach area. Holland invited anyone to come and lend a hand. He says he hopes getting people involved in the improvement project will help give the public a sense of ownership over the park.

“I’m just trying to create a little bit of excitement for people to come and get involved,” Holland said.
