Port Alberni’s annual rock and gem show attracts nearly 2,000 people

Gem show, home show made for busy weekend in city’s sports and recreation centre

More than 1,850 people packed into the Alberni Athletic Hall over the weekend to see the annual Port Alberni Rock and Gem Show.

The annual event attracted vendors and exhibitors from around Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland, and captivated people from toddlers to adults. Everything from fossils to gemstones were on display.

The treasure rock and rock critter stations were popular with kids wanting to crack open a rock to see what was inside, and to make their own creations using rocks.

The Athletic Hall was just one building in the upper Roger Street area that was busy on a wet Saturday: Glenwood Centre hosted the annual Port Alberni Home Show, the Alberni Valley Bulldogs hosted a BC Hockey League game at the AV Multiplex the same night, and Alberni District Secondary School’s drama department’s second of two performances of She Kills Monsters drew hundreds more to the area.
