The West Coast Dragon Boat Society has kicked off its 2024 season already, and members are looking forward to hosting an open house on Sunday, May 5 at Sproat Lake Landing.

Team members “woke up” the boats following winter hibernation in time for the first practice of the year on April 8. Dragon boating is steeped in Chinese cultural significance, and Awakening of the Dragon is a ritual that symbolizes the dragon ending its slumber and re-energizing its chi, or spirit.

Team members hope to attract new members to the sport by holding the open house, which will take place from 1–3 p.m. Anyone aged 12 and over are welcome to try out the sport. Paddles, lifejackets and instruction will be provided. Those aged 12-18 years must have an adult with them to sign a waiver before getting into a dragon boat.

If you’re curious about the sport and anxious to join up, information is regularly posted on the West Coast Dragon Boat Society’s Facebook page. The first two practices are free.

The dragon boat society will also be hosting a race on Sunday, June 9 at Sproat Lake Provincial Park featuring 18 teams from around the region. Anyone wanting more information can check out the West Coast Dragon Boat Society page on Facebook or email westcoastdragonboatsociety@gmail.com.
