Bringing art back to Alberni schools
When Melissa Martin took over as arts administrator for the Community Arts Council of the Alberni Valley, she vowed to bring the arts into schools.
This week she kept her word, hosting Art in the Schools at Eighth Avenue Elementary School on Thursday afternoon.
The event, which wrapped up after the News went to press, featured more than a dozen artists in disciplines such as photography, painting, pottery, jewellery-making, glass work, fibre arts and collage. Students came to the gym to check out the displays and try out some techniques.
“I’m trying to give them more exposure to the arts,” Martin said. “That’s my goal.”
Martin held a mini event in December. She invited a couple of artists to give a talk to some classes one afternoon.
