The next Electric Mermaid live reading event in Port Alberni will feature some tips for job hunting.

Author Janice Nielsen has worked in the employment field for more than 20 years, as an employment counsellor, workshop facilitator and curriculum developer. She is a Registered Vocational Rehabilitation Professional and a member of the Vocational Rehabilitation Professionals of Canada (VRA).

Her book, Don’t Wear White Socks to the Job Interview, was published through Friesen Press in 2024 and features 50 tips for a successful job search.

Nielsen says she started working as a babysitter at the age of 12 and has been a job-seeker ever since. After graduation, she saved her money to move to Australia, where she found a job working in a sewing shop.

At age 38, she returned to school and earned a British Columbia Adult Instructor Diploma from Vancouver Community College, a Human Services Diploma from North Island College and a Justice Studies Bachelor of Arts from Royal Roads University.

Nielsen will be just one of the readers during the Wednesday, March 27 live reading event at Char’s Landing. With host and emcee Derek Hanebury’s literary guidance and a host of other authors through the open mic, this evening promises to keep poetry and prose fans engaged.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the open mic runs from 6-8 p.m. Admission is $10. See www.charslanding.com/events to pre-register for the readers’ list and to select the optional Zoom link.
