Award-winning Cree singer-songwriter Phyllis Sinclair will brings songs from her highly anticipated sixth studio album, Kiyam, to Port Alberni on Friday, April 19.

This deeply personal album builds upon the success of her 2021 acclaimed work Ghost Bones. Kiyam is an ancient Cree mantra that translates into “let it be,” a concept that doesn’t suggest surrender, but rather a pause for reflection, restoration, and renewal. Sinclair’s signature blend of storytelling and evocative melodies deliver a testament to resilience, overcoming hardship, and preserving culture amidst challenges.

Sinclair was nominated for a Canadian Folk Music Award for her fifth album Ghost Bones, which immediately upon its release was propelled to No. 1 on the Canadian National Folk, Roots and Blues Chart and CKUA Radio Network’s Top 100 albums of 2021.

Sinclair uses her craft as a tool to ignite more compassionate, culturally-respectful ways of knowing. Her songs speak to Indigenous realities and point to the power of her culture’s spirituality, using astronomy and mythology to allay and enlighten. Her songs of connection, transformation and empowerment tap into universal experiences while honouring her cultural heritage.

Sinclair will perform at Char’s Landing on Friday, April 19th. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the concert starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available at phyllissinclair.bpt.me. For more information, contact virrich@telus.net.
