A trio of musicians is bringing a Gordon Lightfoot tribute show to Char’s Landing in Port Alberni this weekend.

Since January of this year, Bob Wilson, Andrew McMillan and Trevor Price have been working on a tribute show to Gordon Lightfoot. Although the musicians were heartbroken by the news of Lightfoot’s passing, they were happy to have prepared a tribute to his musical and cultural legacy. They finally had their first show on April 15, in Nanaimo.

They are now excited to be playing in Port Alberni on Saturday, Sept. 30. The show at Char’s Landing will include a selection of Lightfoot’s music from the late ’60s to his last album in 2020, concentrating primarily on the first ten years of his career.

“I began actively pursuing the idea of a Lightfoot tribute after watching Lightfoot perform in November, 2022, in Nanaimo,” said Price. “I was overwhelmed by the magnitude of what he had accomplished musically in his career, but also struck by how important he was to me, personally. Believing this to be true for many people, I felt that this was a worthwhile musical project.”

Price says he hopes to bring Lightfoot’s music to those who were there when it was released, but he also hopes to give younger audiences an appreciation of the beauty Lightfoot created in his musical career.

Sundown: A Gordon Lightfoot Experience is made up of Price, a Nanaimo-based singer-songwriter who grew up on Lightfoot’s music and is active in central and southern Vancouver Island; Bob Wilson, a Nanaimo-based classical guitarist who has studied classical and jazz guitar for many years; and Andrew MacMillan, who has played bass for several bands.

The show at Char’s Landing will take place Saturday, Sept. 30 at 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are available at the door or by contacting Char at 250-730-1636 to reserve.
