A Vancouver Island jazz singer will be bringing a tribute to Tony Bennett to Char’s Landing in Port Alberni later this month.

After Bennett passed away earlier this year, Victoria-based jazz vocalist Angela Verbrugge decided she wanted to pay tribute to his catalogue of recordings over the decades.

“There are just so many wonderful songs he chose that have become part of our consciousness through movies, radio and home listening,” Verbrugge explained. “He had this classy, cool, understated, swinging delivery; just telling the story, and letting listeners remember their own experiences of love, love lost, love sought.”

Verbrugge first performed at Char’s Landing two years ago when she was on tour with Miles Black and enjoyed the venue so much that she is excited to return.

“It was just post-COVID restrictions, and there was such a beautiful energy in the sold-out audience of gratitude for being able to gather again,” she said. “After rehearsing alone those years, I just thought it was one of the most special places I have ever played.”

The show at Char’s Landing will take place on Sunday, Oct. 22, where Verbrugge will be joined by Ray Gallon on piano, Ken Lister on bass and Graham Villette on drums. The music runs from 6-8 p.m. and drinks are available at the bar. Call 1-250-730-1636 to reserve tickets.
