An ultra-authenticate celebration of one of the greatest pop-jazz bands, Steely Dan, is coming to Port Alberni this week.

Stealing Dan performs Friday, September 29, 2023 at the Capitol Theatre in Port Alberni.

Listening to Stealing Dan is a truly unique musical experience, where jazz, pop, soul and blues are merged into a brilliant marriage of lyrics, melody and form. They perform Steely Dan’s musical catalogue with respect and delight, with detailed attention to musical and tonal accuracy. Covers include jazz-infused songs such as Babylon Sisters and Kid Charlemagne, early radio favourites Reelin’ in the Years and Do It Again and blues/rock deep cuts Don’t Take Me Alive and Black Friday.

Stealing Dan recently launched their own YouTube Channel and it has rocketed to over 175,000 views, with one commenter noting, “Honestly if I closed my eyes I’d swear I was listening to the original band.”

Band members include Jim Papp (lead vocals, electric piano, acoustic guitar), Jeff Gillespie (electric guitar, vocals), John Mang (pianos, synthesizers), Art Van Volsen (drums), Jeff Drummond (bass), Claudio Fantinato (alto saxophone), Rachel Cooper (tenor saxophone) and Charity Monro, Colleen Brooks and Trish Horrocks (harmony vocals).

For Van Volsen and Brooks, Friday’s show will be a homecoming, as both musicians are Port Alberni residents.

Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available at eventbrite.ca.
