In her latest song, Port Alberni’s singing sensation Lauren Spencer-Smith grapples with complex emotions.

According to a press release, Spencer-Smith’s single Sad Forever is accompanied by the singer-songwriter’s music video directorial debut and showcases “stunning visuals that match the tone of the beautiful ballad.”

In the video, viewers witness the singer “grappling with complex emotions behind the scenes of a busy and successful life.”

The single was released Friday, Oct. 13, and is featured on the deluxe edition of her debut album Mirror.

The release noted that the song uses the depth and range of the singer’s voice to advocate for “checking in on your mental state” and encouraging listeners to recognize how they feel beneath the surface.

In an e-mail from Universal Music Group, Spencer-Smith wrote that she wanted to put out another song for fans to “cry to/sing along with” while on tour.

“If I’m being honest with you, this whole year my personal life has felt like one bad thing after another,” wrote the singer in the e-mail. “I try my hardest to feel happy and OK but when so many things go wrong, it’s really hard to feel that way … I’ve had so many amazing things happen for my career this year and I’m so forever grateful, but if I tell you the truth, a whole other half of my life has felt the opposite of happy. I still haven’t convinced myself that I’m not going to be sad forever, but I wanted to put this song out to help anyone else who relates to it feel less alone.”

The music video can be viewed on YouTube and the song is available on Spotify and Apple Music.

Spencer-Smith’s recent success has been underscored by performances on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the 2022 MTV VMAs, Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve and more. She was nominated as a Best New Artist for this year’s Juno Awards and performed at the People’s Choice Awards, and Apple Music selected her as one of their Five Breakthrough Artists of 2022.

For the rest of the month and into early November, Spencer-Smith continues her world tour through Australia.
