Letters of the week for June 1

To the Editor,

Recently Liz Stonard of Port Alberni wrote to a Calgary newspaper and said that Albertans should not be able to transport oil to tidewater so that the “pristine waters” of B.C. would not be fouled by bitumen.

First off, obviously she is unaware of how unpristine the waters actually are.

She should do some research into which capital city in Western Canada still releases raw sewage into the ocean. Hint: Victoria.

She should also research how often the beaches in Vancouver are closed due to being less than pristine.

Another bit of research she should do is the history and economy of Port Alberni. It’s resource based, from lumber to pulp. As is Alberta. As is Canada. Resource based.

Also she should also research how many tankers ply the offshore waters from Alaska to Washington—just across the strait from Victoria, that paragon of pristine waters.

Ms. Stonard should have done her research before sending such a letter to a Calgary publication.

Colin Pratt,

Calgary, Alberta
