Celebrate solstice, arts and culture this weekend

Artist open house, children’s summer camps and more on this week’s community art scene

Join us this weekend for the second annual Solstice Arts Festival, celebrating arts, music, family and cultural heritage. From the Rollin Art Centre to the Capitol Theatre, Chars Landing, Art Matters and Tyee landing there will be something for everyone. New this year is a free shuttle that will take you up and down Argyle Street on Saturday only. Admission is free at the Rollin Art Centre, with Days with the Arts and music in the garden along with Art Rave that takes place at the Rollin Art Centre on Friday and Saturday. Performances at the Capitol Theatre, along with many other activities at Art Matters Art Centre and Port Day at Tyee Landing will be happening on Saturday.

ARTIST OPEN HOUSE

Invitation to all local artists; please join us at the Rollin Art Centre, outside terrace, for an afternoon to celebrate art. Meet other local artists, share ideas and bring any current artwork you would like to share. No formal speeches, just an afternoon

of gathering on Sunday, June 25 from 1-4 p.m. Please RSVP by June 16 by calling the Rollin Art Centre at 250-724-3412.

ART EXHIBIT AT ROLLIN

The Community Arts Council presents Baskets and Keepsakes; Nuu Chah Nulth Basketry, a personal collection from Hugh Braker. You won’t want to miss this exhibit, featuring many beautiful examples of baskets, trinkets and other pieces from this collection. On now at the Rollin Art Centre until June 28.

CHILDREN’S ART PROGRAMS

The Rollin Art Centre invites children aged 7-12 to participate in our summer art programs. Camps run every Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday beginning from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. (for ages 7-9) and 1-3:30 p.m. (ages 10-12), and features a new theme each week. These summer art programs promise a creative outlet children need and enjoy that integrates art with learning. At each camp the children will fabricate stimulating artwork and foster friendships with peers. Our first camp begins July 4 and is titled Super Hero’s Unite. TEAS ON THE TERRACE

The Rollin Art Centre Teas on the Terrace will once again be back with right teas this summer. Join us in the garden for another wonderful new musical line-up along with Harvest Thyme Fine Foods serving a light lunch/High Tea at two of the eight teas while serving strawberry shortcake for the remaining six teas. Tickets are $17 for (high tea) which includes a light lunch, or $12 for our Low Tea that includes strawberry shortcake. Tickets sell out quickly. Musical Line up: July 6 (low tea)- 14-year-old Morgan Schoen – acoustic pop and alternative artist. July 13 (low tea) -Dennis Olsen – classical guitar, blues, rock and country. July 20 (low tea) Bluegrass Fever – crowd-pleasing bluegrass bands. July 27 (high tea) – Old Time Fiddlers – influenced from traditional Canadian, folk, country, bluegrass, Celtic and old world music. Aug. 3 (low tea)- Dennis Olsen – Aug.10 (low tea) -Crimson Sky- bluegrass tunes, Irish ballads, old civil war tunes and contemporary songs. Aug. 17 (high tea) Folk Song Circle. CONCERT IN THE GARDEN

Join us for an afternoon of music on Sunday, July 9 from 1-5 p.m. The Rollin Art Centre will be holding a musical afternoon in the gardens with 12 local musicians lead by Don Bergen. Admission is by donation ($5 minimum).
