The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. (IIO) is investigating after a man was found injured in police custody.

Port Alberni RCMP say that they received reports on April 20, 2024 that a man may have been in breach of a court order and may have been considering self-harm. They attended a residence in the 3800 block of Galiano Drive, arrested a man and took him to the local police detachment to be lodged in cells.

The man later complained of pain and was taken to the hospital, where it was determined he had sustained a non-life-threatening injury.

The IIO says it was notified of the incident shortly after it occurred and has begun an investigation. How and when the man was injured are the subjects of the IIO investigation, as is whether or not police played any role.

The IIO is asking any person who has relevant information about the incident to please contact the toll-free witness line at 1-855-446-8477 or the contact form on the www.iiobc.ca website.
