Crash claims young Alberni man near Cathedral Grove

Police have identified a Port Alberni man after his truck collided with a tree near Cathedral Grove.

Austin Longeuay, 20, was driving alone in his 1998 Nissan pickup early last Thursday when he failed to negotiate a right-hand turn two kilometres west of Cathedral Grove, RCMP Staff Sgt. Kevin Murray said.

The truck went off the road and collided with a tree on the driver’s side.

Emergency personnel responded to the scene and found Longeuay pinned in the severely damaged truck suffering from chest trauma and compound leg fractures.

Fire personnel extricated Longeuay from the truck and medevac’d him to Victoria General Hospital where he died of his injuries Thursday night.

A cause of the accident hasn’t been determined, and both police and the B.C. Coroner continue to investigate, Murray said.
