Saanich crash victim identified

The former Port Alberni resident who was killed in a car accident in Victoria has been identified as Bryan Mason, 21.

Mason was killed on Gorge Road in Saanich when his Chevy pickup crossed the oncoming traffic lanes and struck a hydro pole on the sidewalk.

The truck was engulfed in flames when police arrived, police said.

Officers fought the fire with extinguishers, but fire personnel was needed to put out the flames.

Mason was extricated from his truck but he died enroute to hospital.

Mason grew up in Port Alberni and graduated from Alberni District Secondary School in 2008.

He is survived by his mother Donna Douglas (Andrews), his father Bob Mason, stepfather John Douglas; as well as brother Brad.

He is also survived by grandfather Bill Andrews and uncle David Andrews.
