Christopher Mathias Sam of Ahousaht has been charged with second degree murder in the killing of another Ahousaht man.

Clad in a white T-shirt and black pants, a boyish looking Sam, 21, appeared before a packed Port Alberni provincial courtroom.

He is charged with killing a 45-year-old Ahousaht man on Sunday. The RCMP have not named the victim, however, a family member has confirmed that the deceased is Raymond Samuel Junior.

Sam also faces charges of sexual assault and common assault in incidents involving separate victims.

A publication ban prevents revealing their names.

Sam’s attorney, Clint Sadlemyer and prosecutor Gordon Baines agreed to adjourn the matter until June 23.

Sam will remain in custody and will make his appearance via video then.

Outside the court Sadlemyer said that there are reams of material to review that are part of the case.

“There are going to be hundreds if not thousands of documents to review before I can give an assessment,” he said.

Given the sheer volume of information another adjournment may be necessary in June, Sadlemyer added.

The killing has had a profound impact on the small Flores Island community, which is layered with a cultural matrix of family relationships.

Samuel was an Ahousaht band member, but he grew up in Port Alberni, and lived back on Flores Island intermittently.

“I hope the community can heal itself – I hope those differences can be resolved,” Sadlemyer said.

On his Facebook page's basic information section , Sam wrote in part, “I'm looking forward to building a better future for myself and get set for the years to come.

“I'm taking one step at a time to make sure I do things right.”

He also wrote that his life hadn’t been going well for four years but that he was trying to take steps to better himself.

Sam also wrote about the community with a sense disquiet. “I moved to Vancouver to run away from it all lol by FROM IT ALL (sic) I mean ahousaht.”
