Tsunami advisory issued for West Coast of Vancouver Island
A tsunami advisory has been issued for the outer West Coast of Vancouver Island.
The advisory was issued by the provincial emergency management branch and covers the area between the outer West Coast of Vancouver Island from Cape Scott to Port Renfrew. Port Alberni is among the areas covered by the advisory.
According to the branch, a tsunami advisory means that that a low-level tsunami is expected. Potentially strong currents could be dangerous for low-lying coastal areas. Residents are advised to stay away from beaches, shorelines and marinas until further notice.
Previously, a tsunami warning was issued only for those coasts in the region of the earthquake and included only the northern tip of Vancouver Island.
The initiatives were sparked by a 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck Haida Gwaii at 8:07 p.m., Earthquake Canada reported.
The quake was located 139 kilometres south of Masset, according to the US Geological Surveywebsite.
