Repeat sex offender in Alberni gets 10 months

A repeat sex offender who committed one sex crime while awaiting sentencing for another will be spending the next while in jail.

Judge R. Gould sentenced Shawn Pater, 33, to 10 months in prison for one count of sexual assault. Pater was also ordered to provide a sample of his DNA to the federal crime data bank.

The incident occurred on Dec. 23, provincial crown prosecutor Gordon Baines said.

Pater invited a 16-year-old girl to his residence to wrap Christmas presents. When she arrived she found no one else there and was alone with Pater.

The girl asked to be brought home but Pater said he wanted to shower first. He came out of the bathroom and exposed his genitals to her. Pater then grabbed the girl, pulled her shirt off and was trying to pull her pants off when guests arrived. He threatened the girl, telling her to keep her mouth shut about what happened.

Two days later the girl disclosed the incident to a friend, who brought her to RCMP.

On Dec. 25, police went to a residence where Pater and his family gathered for Christmas dinner. They lured him away under the guise that there was an incident at his apartment and arrested him.
