Alberni garbage truck limps into 2014

Port Alberni city council is delaying the purchase of a new garbage truck because the lowest bid received was $30,000 over budget, but raised questions as to whether the city should get out of the commercial garbage pick-up business.

The packer body of the current eight-year old garbage truck is wearing out and the engine and transmission is beginning to cause problems, said city engineer Guy Cicon.

The budget to replace this truck is $230,000 but the lowest bid received was for $260,052.80 plus tax. Cicon will look again at replacing the truck next year.

Coun. Cindy Solda reminded council that this option was discussed before but local businesses complained and were willing to pay more to continue having a city-run garbage collection. Cicon said commercial garbage collection is currently revenue neutral.
