An alleged thief made tracks after being reported for suspiciously checking out cars at night in the Alberni Valley, and that's exactly how RCMP found him.

Police responded to a complaint of a suspicious person riding a bike and checking vehicle doors along the 4300 block of Alderwood Dr. at 5:30 a.m. on Friday morning, RCMP Const. Shelly Schedewitz said.

RCMP didn't have to call out the tracking dogs or start a massive dragnet to find the would-be bandit. Instead, police followed fresh bicycle tire tracks in the snow, which lead them to a 38-year-old Port Alberni man who was subsequently arrested. The man is in custody and is facing charges.

Police are encouraging the public to continue to report suspicious activity by contacting the local detachment at 723-2424, or contact Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS.
