A Port Alberni man is facing 13 charges including robbery, assault and assaulting a police officer after an early-morning incident on Sunday, April 30.

At 6:36 a.m. on April 30 Port Alberni RCMP responded to a robbery in a residence in the 2500-block of Second Avenue. Police are alleging that Matthew Leonard Burke, 28, got into an altercation with an unnamed Port Alberni man, 55, and demanded money from the male.

During the course of the incident, in which Burke is accused of threatening the man with a weapon, the victim received a non-life threatening injury to his hand that did not require hospitalization.

Burke was apprehended nearby a few hours later.

While attempting to arrest Burke, according to RCMP Cpl. Amelia Hayden, “he resisted arrest and attempted to assault the arresting police officers. Burke was eventually taken into custody and transported to the Port Alberni RCMP Detachment.”

The arresting officers were not injured in the altercation, she added.

On May 1, charges were sworn against Burke for robbery, assault, two counts of assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest, five counts of breach of recognizance and three counts of breach of probation. Burke has been remanded in custody until his next court appearance on May 3.
