Two new candidates filed their nomination papers for the Mid Island-Pacific Rim riding just before the deadline, bringing the number of candidates running for the May 9 provincial election to six.

Robert Alexander Clarke of Port Alberni has put his name in the ring for the Libertarian Party, and Julian Fell of Errington is running for the BC Conservatives.

Incumbent Scott Fraser (NDP), Darren DeLuca (Liberal), Dan Cebuliak (BC Refederation) and Alicia La Rue (Green) are the other four candidates.

Fell is Area F regional director for the Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN). He says he’s running for philosophical reasons. “Being in local government, we’re the first to realize all the stuff being downloaded on us,” he said. Issues like homelessness and the lack of doctors in the riding aren’t being discussed in the budget, and that leaves “feelings of helplessness,” he said.

“I’m trying to give people a voice, something different to vote for than others are offering.”

All candidates will have a chance to share their platforms with the public at an all-candidates’ meeting on Tuesday, April 25, 7 p.m. at the Italian Hall in Port Alberni (4065 Sixth Ave.).

The Alberni Valley News is also profiling all the riding candidates, in no particular order, both online at www.albernivalleynews.com and in print.
