A driver is lucky to have escaped with minor injuries following a rollover accident on Cowley Road in Cherry Creek, just outside Port Alberni, on Sunday.

The single-vehicle incident happened right before 4 p.m. after a Jeep Cherokee Sport turned left from Cherry Creek Road onto Cowley Road.

The driver’s right-side tires slipped into a ditch on the side of the road, Port Alberni RCMP Watch Commander Cpl. Pat Jenkins said. “The driver ran out of ditch and hit the culvert…(the car) went end over end and ended up facing the other direction.”

The driver “was taken to hospital with what is believed to be minor injuries,” Jenkins said. “We’re very thankful it wasn’t more serious than it turned out to be.”

Jenkins said speed didn’t appear to be a factor in the accident. “Witnesses don’t believe she took the corner too fast,” he said. “It was a matter of getting her wheels in the ditch and trying to get out of it.”
