At 9:13 a.m. on Tuesday, June 6, Port Alberni RCMP, along with other emergency services, responded to a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of 10th Avenue at Burde Street.

A blue Dodge Journey was travelling southbound on 10th Avenue when the driver appeared to have suffered a sudden medical emergency. His vehicle drove up onto the curb, just prior to Burde Street, then entered the intersection, striking a Toyota Highlander that was stopped at the stop sign on the west side of the intersection. The force of the collision caused the Toyota to be pushed into the neighbouring yard, destroying a brick-walled fence.

The driver of the Toyota was uninjured in the collision. The 73-year-old Dodge Journey driver, from Port Alberni, was taken to hospital where he later died from what appears to be a result of his medical emergency. The BC Coroners Service is assisting with the investigation.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash is asked to contact Cst. Fawcett of the Port Alberni RCMP at 250-723-2424.
