A public funeral and procession will take place Saturday afternoon for retired Victoria Fire Chief Doug Angrove.

It will begin at 1 p.m. near CFB Esquimalt at the corner of Lyall Street and Canteen road, and travel east to the Archie Browning Sports Centre. Public seating will be available at the curling rink with doors opening at approximately 1:30 p.m. once the funeral procession has arrived. The service will begin at 2 p.m.

Angrove was Victoria’s 31st Fire Chief and lost his battle with brain cancer last month at the age of 59. He grew up in Esquimalt and played both Junior and Senior A lacrosse, eventually playing in the Mann Cup.

He moved to Nanaimo at the age of 22 and served a total of 24 years with Nanaimo Fire Rescue, first as a fire fighter and then as Deputy Fire Chief of the Nanaimo Fire Department.

Angrove then moved back to Victoria and served as fire chief for five years, and eight in total with the Victoria Fire Department.

The service will include many speakers, both current and retired fire chiefs, family and friends. Access to the curling rink will be through the back entrance off the Lyall Street parking lot.
