Port Alberni RCMP have received several reports of thefts from vehicles over the past week. It appears that thieves are accessing unlocked vehicles and stealing whatever they can get their hands on, including wallets and credit cards, according to RCMP Cpl. Amelia Hayden.

Police are reminding the public to ensure when vehicles are left unoccupied, whether in a parking lot, on the street or in the driveway, windows should be up and doors locked. Further, don’t leave anything in plain sight within the vehicle.

“Never leave your wallet, purse or identification in your vehicle. Even if you think you’ll only be a few minutes, take your belongings and lock your vehicle,” Hayden said. “It only takes a moment for a thief to leave their mark.

“The Port Alberni Community Policing volunteers are out around town with ICBC’s Lock Out Auto Crime program to bring awareness to vehicle owners on how to minimize the opportunities for theft from vehicle”, she said.

Would-be thieves look for opportunities to steal, don’t provide it to them. These crimes of opportunity are easily preventable. A moment of prevention can save a vehicle owner a lot of money, time and grief.”
