APRIL 14, 1935- NOV. 28, 2016

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of “Jack”, an incredibly wonderful husband,father, grandfather, great grandfather and loyal friend. Jack passed away Monday, November 28th in the arms of hisdevoted wife, Pat Shaw.Jack was born and raised in Port Alberni, a place he always called home.Predeceased by his mother Dolly,father John,sister Dorothy and eldestdaughter Barbara Mills. He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Pat, who wasthe love of his life. 3 children, Tracie, Erin/Scott,Clayton/Francis, stepsonsLee/Ruth, Darren,11 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren,all ofwhom adored him as he adored them.Jack had a stellar career with MacMillan Bloedel for 44 years, starting as a casual duringhis school years as mailboy and ending his career as the Industrial Relations Manager,Nanaimo Region in 1996. When Jack retired from MB, he was contracted by Weyerhaueserand other Companies in the Industry as a mediator and negotiator. Jack was one of theoriginal founding members of Local 686, United Pulp and Papermakers Union. He becamePresident of that Union and was very instrumental in negotiating for better pensions andbenefits for his members. He did such a good job of negotiating, in the early 70’s MacMillanBloedel had him join their Head Office Labour Relations Dept.to put his outstandingbargaining skills to work for them. He was known by his peers as a “great guy” both professionally and socially.Jack spent many of his years in Alberni as a caregiver to his sister Dorothy, he was a basketball referee and refereed the Alberni Athletics game in 1955 when they won the Canadian Championships and was the Founding Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Edgewood Chemical Dependency Treatment Centre in Nanaimo. Jack will be sadly missed by the many people who knew him.Pat and family would like to thank the staff at Traveller’s Lodge for their kind and compassionate care of Jack during his last years as well as the compassion shown to Pat during his residency.A “Celebration of Life” will be held on Saturday,January 28th @ 1:30 p.m.at the Nanaimo Golf & Country Club.In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Building Fund of Eden Gardens in care of Nanaimo Traveller’s Lodge,1298 Nelson Street, Nanaimo, BC.
