1924-2016

The family announces the passing of Lilian Whitehead on May 21, 2016. Predeceased by husband George, daughter Christine and granddaughter Tracey. Born in Oldam UK Lilian was the youngest of a large blended family, both parents being previously married. As a young lady Lilian worked for the U K government tax service and entertained with her singing during the war. Lilian met George on a blind date through one of her sisters and they all chummed together before George shipped off to war. George’s submarine was reported sunk and he was reported missing in action and spent the next three years as a POW managing to escape numerous times but always recaptured. Lilian’s faith in George coming home was rewarded when the war ended and he sailed back to the U K. Lilian and George were married June 6 1945 and started their family. The economy and job prospects where not great after the war so George asked Lilian to emigrate to Canada along with many others and start a new chapter in their lives. So in March of 1957 the Whiteheads packed up three suitcases, three children and with the equivalent of $27.00 dollars headed west. Arriving in Vancouver on a wet, cloudy day was not unlike their departure from Liverpool on a wet, cloudy day three weeks earlier. Lilian was introduced to the new life styles, sayings and customs by her very friendly neighbours and new friends made in Canada. 1962 brought Lilian and her family to Comox Valley where her and George had purchased a chicken farm in Dove Creek. George was a good dairy herdsman but not so good with chickens so after a couple of years they both took jobs in other vocations. Lilian purchased an Emporium novelty and gift store in Courtenay which brought more new people into her life. Singing was one of Lilian’s passions and it was not long before she was involved with the Coval Choristers, singing and acting for many years. Another passion was the Comox Legion where they engaged with many fellow Britishers and Veterans. After many years of entertaining at pub nights held around the valley at seniors complexes and homes Lilian served as President of the Womens Auxiliary to the Legion. Always one to volunteer and lend a hand Lilian served 10 years with the B.C. Heart & Stroke, was a past Cub Leader and donated time to the United Church. Lilian will be fondly missed by the family which she and George helped to create; son Martin ( Sharon), son Michael, five grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and the many friends and acquaintances she acquired during her 92 years. A service will be held August 4, 2016, 2:00 - 4:00 pm in the Comox Legion. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the SPCA.
