Monica passed away suddenly on Thursday, February 18, 2016 at the age of 81. She battled with Diabetes the majority of her life. Monica leaves behind her devoted husband Dennis. This past July they celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary. In addition, Monica leaves behind her son Ian (Silvia); grandchildren Ryan, and Sara; sister Betty (Ron) Sparrow and their children Jeanette, Michael (Karen) and several great nieces and nephews. Together with their son, and her parents Thomas and Ivy, Dennis and Monica emigrated from England in 1966. Their journey abroad once again united them with Betty, Ron and family who had immigrated to Canada and settled in Port Alberni the previous year. Monica and Dennis were long time members of the Haymakers Square Dance Club where they enjoyed many dances and trips with the group in which they met many lifelong friends. In her late 50’s, Monica obtained her driver’s license which gave her a new lease on life. As a matter of fact, she enjoyed driving so much that Dennis eventually had to settle for the passenger’s seat. This new independence allowed her to become highly involved in her volunteer work at Fir Park Village. She loved to spend countless hours at the Village assisting with a variety of tasks such as: Ladies Auxiliary, decorating, helping to organize the teas and bazaars, Bingo Caller and collator. Monica was honoured to receive the “Citizen of the Year” award for 1993 and then again in 2006. A Tea Of Remembrance will be held 2:00pm – 4:00pm, Sunday, February 28, 2016 at the Cherry Creek Community Hall, 3720 Moore Rd. Friends and family are warmly welcomed. Monica’s family would like to thank the staff of the BC Ambulance Service who assisted her in her time of need, the dedicated staff of the WCGH and especially Drs. Fayi, Lund and Kitshoff. In lieu of flowers, donations in Monica’s memory may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association, 276 – 2950 Douglas St, Victoria, BC., V8T 4N4 or the Fir Park Village Foundation New Bus Fund, 4411 Wallace St., Port Alberni, BC., V9Y 7Y5
