Doctors get proactive in Alberni

It started with one doctor. And now that doctor is hoping to multiply his efforts 500-fold.

Port Alberni Dr. Daryl Lund started Walk With Your Doc last year, and drew a modest number of people—primarily his patients—to Bob Dailey Stadium for a BC Medical Association-sponsored walk.

This year, Lund has persuaded several of his medical colleagues to join him.

This walk doesn’t have set distances. It is not raising money for anything. Anyone can join. The end goal is simply to raise awareness about being healthy, and to have fun while you’re succeeding.

Nevertheless, Walk With Your Doc, taking place on Thursday, May 10 at the stadium, has snowballed from there. Parks and Rec has ensured the walk will be a memorable event; there will be live entertainment and information booths. Lund hopes to draw 500 people to the stadium, rain or shine.

It is gratifying to see how many people have jumped on board with this event, because it shows who has a vested interest in the physical health of the Alberni Valley.

The walk is a natural fit for the Integrated Health Network, says dietitian Sandra Gentleman, because it fits the IHN’s role of promoting health.

The same goes for Parks and Rec, which is all about developing lifestyles for people.

So take the time on Thursday, May 10 to walk with your doctor on a path to a healthier lifestyle. Registration begins at 5:30 p.m. and the walk starts at 6 p.m.
