LETTER: Argyle Street intersection ripe for roundabout

To the Editor,

I’ve been using the intersection at Argyle Street and Anderson Avenue for the past six years and I have a concern: I have seen several near accidents when more than two cars approach this intersection.

It’s not a four-way stop, which works when people are courteous and take their turn. This intersection is just plain confusing. Four lanes are through lanes and the other two are stop. Problems arise when either one of the Anderson travellers want to turn as three or four cars approach.

When school is out it gets crazy. The other day all four cars approaching came to a complete stop in the middle of the intersection as two cars approaching on Anderson wanted to turn and two cars passing through on Argyle somehow got caught up in the mess. It happened again recently and I’m getting nervous!

I’ve watched Victoria, Duncan, Chemainus, Ladysmith and even Parksville and Qualicum Beach adopt the roundabout. I know they are expensive; I know it takes time to train a population to use them properly but when they work, recent surveys show 50 percent less accidents. Could it be time for Port Alberni to consider adopting them?

Dale Robertson,

Port Alberni
