LETTER: City of Port Alberni needs to cut back on spending like the rest of us

To the Editor,

When I heard the news about the potential 17 percent homeowner tax increase, I was quite surprised.

Since COVID-19, most of us have had to cut back and budget on many things

What used to be a 1.95 percent mortgage is now more than 5 percent. Many are having difficulty making these payments.

Food prices, and even fast food, have gone up considerably.

I wrote a letter to the mayor and the response was a typical political reply about infrastructure and new equipment. I used to do city tenders on new vehicles. We would sell the trade-ins to the Courtenay city works yard. If the used vehicles were good enough for Courtenay, they should be also good enough for us.

The city has to do what we all have had to do. They have to cut back on unnecessary spending.

If we can and have to do this, so can the city. It’s a matter of will.

Just do it.

Paul Pley,

Port Alberni
