Alberni history column a nostalgic trip

Re: 100 YEARS: First Port Alberni election was a horse race, Jan. 27, www.albernivalleynews.com.
I was thrilled to see your article. I picked my great-grandfather out of the picture right away. My grandfather was born in “Port” and my mother grew up there.
My husband’s family also has many ties to Port Alberni. His grandmother was born two months after my grandfather— both in New Alberni.
My husband’s grandmother’s two aunts and their families (the Watsons and Carters) lived for a time beside my great-grandparents. Small world.
My great-grandfather was GH Bird and Bird Street (near Harbour Quay) is named after him.
