Alberni's Palmer makes U-debut
Port Alberni golfer Greg Palmer made his debut with the University of New Orleans (UNO) Privateers in the Stephen F. Austin Crown Classic in Lufkin, Texas, this week.
Palmer, a freshman, finished second overall of the Privateers golfers and 23rd overall at the competition. He carded an 8-over 80 in the final round and finished the competition with a three-round score of 78-81-80-239 (23 over par).
UNO finished fifth overall of eight teams.
“That’s pretty exciting,” Alberni Golf Club head pro Bruce MacDonald said.
Palmer is a product of the Alberni Golf Club’s junior program.
He finished sixth out of the top 20 B.C. junior golfers and qualified for the Canadian amateur men’s competition in 2011, where he finished 83 out of 240 players.
“He’s definitely one of our hardest working juniors I’ve seen,” MacDonald said.
“He never stopped working on his game. We’re proud of him, for sure.”
Other Alberni golfers who went on to play post-secondary golf, some on scholarships, include Lenny Cyr, who is now a CPGA professional in North Vancouver, amateur women’s champion Christina (Spence) Proteau, and Jeff Dagg and Alyssa Herkel, who are both University of Victoria alumni.
Dagg is still playing with the UVic men’s golf team.
