Sports briefs from around Alberni

Dziurzynski shoots, scores

Former Alberni Valley Bulldog David Dziurzynski, 23, scored his first National Hockey League goal Tuesday night to help the Ottawa Senators defeat the New York Islanders 3-1 in Ottawa. It was Dziurzynski’s third NHL appearance in three years.

Stewart player of the week

Five goals and two assists spurred Bulldogs’ forward Hunter Stewart to a BCHL Player of the Week nod this week.

Stewart picked up the seven points in helping the Bulldogs earn four of a possible six points last week. He wrapped his week with another two goals and second first-star selection in an overtime win at home against Westside Warriors from Kelowna.

Stewart’s teammate, forward Evan Tironese, earned honourable mention for his 10-point week.

Fitzgerald bro. in scoring hunt

Myles Fitzgerald—one of three triplets who played minor hockey in the Alberni Valley and now suit up for the Victoria Grizzlies—is in the hunt for the Brett Hull Trophy for top scorer in the BCHL.

Fitzgerald scored 37 points in a 21-game scoring streak to put him in the top 5, but he’s been sidelined with concussion-like symptoms.
