Midget reps need help for provincials

The Van Isle Ford Midget A Bulldogs are hosting the midget rep hockey provincials this spring, from March 16–22, and they’re looking for volunteers to help pull this B.C. championship off.

Teams from 10 different regions, some as far away as Yukon Territory, will converge on the Alberni Valley for the tourney, spokesperson Roxanne Leyland said. Although the Bulldogs and a handful of other teams have already clinched spots, the remaining teams won’t be known until early March.

The provincial event kicks off Alberni Valley Minor Hockey Association’s 50th anniversary, Leyland said. Up to 400 players, coaches, support staff and family members will be in the Alberni Valley for the week.

Volunteers are needed in a variety of areas. Arrangements are being made to have a local host for each visiting team. Since teams will only play one game per day, they will have a lot of free time to explore the community, Leyland said.

To keep up with the team’s plans for the provincials, Leyland has created a website at www.avhockey.net. Once the tourney starts, live scores will be posted for each game, and more details about the participating teams will be available.

Follow the provincials on Facebook (AV Minor Hockey) or Twitter (@avmha), too.

To volunteer, please call tournament director Al McCulloch at 250-720-3671 or e-mail aligm99@hotmail.com.

ICE CHIPS...The Bulldogs beat Sooke 5-1 at home last weekend to advance to the Island Tier 3 championships, a three-game series with Victoria Ice Hawks. Both teams are guaranteed spots.
