Port Alberni Black Sheep grab ‘gritty’ rugby win against Nanaimo

Final score was 21-19 for the Black Sheep

The Port Alberni Black Sheep picked up a “gritty” BC Rugby win against the visiting Nanaimo Hornets last weekend.

The final score on Saturday, Oct. 28 was 21-19 for the Black Sheep, who were led in scoring by Ty Shannon with one try, one conversion and three penalty goals. Gavin Purewal also picked up another try for the Black Sheep.

“It was a pretty gritty game for the boys,” coach Jas Purewal laughed after the game. “It was a tough second half for us—we couldn’t get anything going. Credit to Nanaimo—they were more physical than we anticipated and they put a lot of pressure on us.”

Despite this, Purewal said his team “defended really well” in the second half of the game, with Aaron Badovinac picking up a couple of steals at critical points in the game to set the Black Sheep up on the offensive side.

“Our attack, our lineout is still struggling a little bit,” Purewal admitted. “So we have some work to do.”

The Black Sheep now have a 2-0 record in provincial competition and will head to Vancouver next weekend to face the Rowers. They will be back at home on Saturday, Nov. 18 as the Cowichan Piggies come to town.
