Alberni Extra reopens as No Frills

Extra Foods in Alberni has reopened as a No Frills franchise.

Extra Foods closed its doors for a few days last week and is now reopened—as a No Frills franchise.

“The landscape is changing in Port Alberni and we believe expanding the No Frills in this market allows us to compete...and sets us up for the future,” said Craig Ware, spokesperson for parent company Loblaw Co. Ltd.

The store will feature more President’s Choice and No Name products, Ware said.

“The No Frills banner is a proven hard discount model.”

No Frills will still have a produce section as well as meat and bakery. However, since the focus is now on food and grocery, the clothing section is gone, Ware said.

“The most obvious change will be price,” he added.

Ware would not say the recent opening of the supercentre at Walmart—which includes a grocery store—precipitated the change.

Extra Foods opened in Port Alberni in November 2004.

Unionized staff voted in favour earlier this year to switch to No Frills.

Local owner Tyler Steel continues to operate the grocery store under the new franchise name, Ware said.
