Domtar employees clean up neighbourhood for Earth Day

Paper company, formerly Paper Excellence, gets out in community in Port Alberni

Management and staff from Domtar Port Alberni Mill were on the street cleaning up for Earth Day in late April.

Domtar is the new name for the former Catalyst or Paper Excellence Paper Mill.

A dozen or so employees gathered at Clutesi Haven Marina and walked both sides of River Road all the way to the Orange Bridge crossing the Somass River, picking up garbage.

This is the first time in nearly a decade that mill employees have done a neighbourhood cleanup, said Keith Ellwood, general manager at Domtar.

"We're cleaning up as part of community engagement," said Aiden Martin, who along with Ellwood and Allan Walker were part of the cleanup crew.

Martin said Domtar would eventually like to extend the cleanup to include other members of the community in the future. "We would like to build on this a little further for next year."

The cleanup is also part of a company initiative to get the word out that the paper mill has a new name: Domtar. Paper Excellence re-branded as Domtar in October 2024, announcing operational integration of the recently acquired Domtar Corporation (and other legal entities) and Resolute Forest Products with the legacy Paper Excellence business.
