Alberni District Co-op provides $38,000 to local non-profits

Community Investment Funds presented during community barbecue

The Alberni District Co-op has donated $38,000 to local community groups and charitable organizations in the Alberni Valley.

Seven different groups received cheques from Alberni District Co-op staff and board members during a community celebration at Alberni District Liquor Store on Wednesday, June 26. The celebration also included a free barbecue lunch, which was well-attended despite the rainy weather said Alberni District Co-op general manager Dave Heinrichs.

"It's good for us to get out in the community and do things like this," said Heinrichs.

This is the third year that Co-op has has presented cheques to local community groups through its Community Investment Fund. The fund comes from the previous year's profits and is meant to help with community projects that require a larger amount of funding. Recipients are selected by the Co-op's board of directors. This year's Community Investment Fund, at $38,000, is the highest total yet.

This year's recipients are:

Port Alberni Backpack Program Society ($7,500)

Wholesome Meals on Wheels ($10,000)

Port Alberni Shelter Society ($5,000)

Literacy Alberni Society ($3,000)

Kuu-us Crisis Line Society ($2,500)

Special Olympics BC - Port Alberni ($5,000)

Alberni Valley Rescue Squad ($5,000)

Keep an eye out for Alberni District Co-op's annual Community Day, which is scheduled to take place on Saturday, Oct. 5 at the Glenwood Centre.
