Alberni Valley set to celebrate Pride week from May 27–June 1

Variety of events are planned throughout the week, from dances to art workshops and more

The Alberni Valley Pride Society is gearing up for another week of Pride-themed events.

This year’s Pride Week in Port Alberni will take place from Monday, May 27 to Saturday, June 1 and will kick off with a flag raising at Port Alberni City Hall on Monday morning.

On Monday at 7 p.m., a free Pride Yoga event will take place at the North Island College campus’s Indigenous Outdoor Gathering Space. Make sure to bring a mat, towel and water.

On Tuesday, May 28, the Grove Art Gallery at Harbour Quay will be hosting a teen drop-in from 3-6 p.m. for $5. Teens can collaborate on a Pride banner, listen to music and enjoy coffee and tea in a queer-friendly space.

Later on Tuesday evening, Twin City Brewing will host Drag Race Trivia at 7 p.m. with special guest drag queen Frida Kahl Ho. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased in advance by contacting Twin City Brewing.

On Wednesday, May 29, Alberni Valley United Church will host a free Pride barbecue event, with chalk and bubbles, from 5-7 p.m.

On Thursday, May 30, a free disco rollerskating event will take place at the Glenwood Centre from 6:15 to 8:15 p.m. Free skate rentals are available.

On Friday, May 31, the Vancouver Island Regional Library will host free drag queen story time with special guest Miss Frida. Everyone is welcome to this all-ages event, which takes place from 4-5 p.m.

A free Dancing Through the Decades youth party will take place on Friday evening from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. This event is open to youth from 12 to 18 years old. Email albernivalleypride@gmail.com to register. Tickets will not be available at the door.

On Saturday, June 1, the Grove Art Gallery will host a kids community art-making event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. For $5, kids can come paint a wooden hexagon and answer the question, “What does Pride mean to you?”

Also on Saturday, another free yoga event will take place at North Island College at 11 a.m. Make sure to bring a mat, towel and water.

On Saturday evening, an adult Pride Dance Party will take place at the Italian Hall starting at 7 p.m. Tickets are $20 cash at the door.

There are a few other events taking place throughout the week. The Alberni Valley Pride Society will host a car wash fundraiser on Saturday, May 25 at the 7-Eleven on Redford Street from noon to 4 p.m.

Foxy Box will be offering 25 percent off wax and laser service for Pride Week using the promo code “AV Pride 24” and Cloud City will be selling AV Pride shirts.

The city will be hosting a Kitchen Kids and Storytime event with drag queen Miss Frida on Sunday, May 26. Kids aged 8-12 can be registered at www.playinpa.ca.

Trinity Anglican and Lutheran Church on Fifth Avenue and Angus Street will also be hosting a Pride Sunday service at 10 a.m.
