The Alberni Valley Heritage Network is celebrating National Heritage Week (Feb. 17–23) with a number of events.

This Thursday, Feb. 20 volunteers with the Industrial Heritage Centre, located beside the curling club (3250 Ninth Ave.) will host a tour from 1–3 p.m. Visitors can see the collection of heritage vehicles and learn more about projects currently under restoration.

A guided tour of McLean Mill National Historic Site is planned for Friday, Feb. 21 from 1–3 p.m. Discover what projects volunteers are working on, and view the lumber deck, the steam donkey and more.

A reading with Nanaimo historical author Lynne Bowen was thwarted by the sudden snowstorm Port Alberni experienced on Tuesday. Bowen did make it to the Alberni Valley, however attendance was poor, museum educational curator Shelley Harding said.

Bowen read from her new book, Those Island People, a collection of stories about Vancouver Islanders. Harding said she hopes to invite Bowen back to the Valley.
