Families 'go green' at Family Literacy Day

Activities covered various forms of literacy, from food to health to reading

Dozens of families came out to the annual Family Literacy Day events at Echo Centre despite the first significant snowfall of the year on Feb. 1, 2025.

This year's theme was "Go Green" and activities included recycling games, playing with natural "slime" made of psyillium husk, monster bookmark kits to go, planting seeds and more. The popular "stone soup" station was in one of the activity rooms: organizers had soup for people to try, then shopping bags, all the ingredients laid out with instructions on how many vegetables to take, and a recipe.

Storytime was one of the best attended, said one organizer. Kaitlin Parker from the Vancouver Island Regional Library read a book and sang songs with gathered children. Then Sonja Whitehead from St. John Ambulance introduced children to Toby, her therapy dog.
