Literacy Alberni held their annual picnic on Friday, Aug. 2 on the grounds of their office at 5100 Tebo Ave. (formerly Klitsa School). It was a potluck affair that brought a wide variety of foods with an international flavour. New residents from various countries came with their families and made it an interactive afternoon.
Special guest MLA Josie Osborne was introduced by Marilyn Gibson of Literacy Alberni.
Osborne complimented the group on their work.
“Thank you for the invitation and thank you to the board, the volunteers and those participating," she said. "You are doing a great job here.”
Literacy Alberni would love to see some good-quality books donated. There is a drop-off box at the Third Avenue Recycling Depot where members of the public may leave books. Volunteers from Literacy Alberni pick up the books, which are then distributed through different events, at the Literacy Alberni office and through the little free library boxes around town. Members of the Rotary Club of Port Alberni have adopted most of the libraries (some are regularly stocked by longtime volunteers) and ensure they are filled with books. They do not accept donations of encyclopedias.
Literacy Alberni is celebrating their 20th year in operation this month. Earlier this month, they held a 50/50 draw to mark the anniversary. The winner was Lynne H. from Port Alberni, who received $677.50.
The Literacy Alberni office is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. during the summer. If you would like more information please call 250-723-7323.
