GIVING BACK: The Attic finds a second life for items donated in Port Alberni

The Attic is run by volunteers with the Alberni Health Care Auxiliary

Popular Port Alberni thrift store The Attic makes sure nothing goes to waste.

The shop, which is run by the Alberni Health Care Auxiliary, raises funds for the West Coast General Hospital. Funds go directly to equip the hospital with much-needed equipment after the auxiliary asks doctors and nurses what is needed. Money raised also goes towards bursaries that are given to graduating high school students.

Volunteers at The Attic try to recycle everything that is donated and cannot be sold. They take metal, electronics and batteries to the Recycle Depot, and any clothing that cannot be sold due to stains or poor condition is shredded and recycled to produce new fabrics.

Wearable clothing that is not up to standard is donated to the Port Alberni Shelter Society, while unsold items are passed on to Diabetes Canada.

Damaged textiles are given to the Alberni-Clayoquot branch of the BC SPCA for animal bedding, while grad dresses and prom dresses are donated to the Port Alberni Backpack Program for repurposing.

The Alberni Health Care Auxiliary is always looking for new volunteers. If you are interested, stop by The Attic to pick up an application. The Attic Thrift Shop is located at Adelaide Mall on Johnston Road and is open Tuesday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
