The Alberni Valley Child and Youth Network will celebrate the 26th annual Family Literacy Day on Feb. 1 with a green theme.

"Learn to be Green Together" is the theme for this year's event, which will feature games, play centres, interactive booths, face painting and more.

Kaitlin and therapy pup Toby will have a storytime for children. Bring your own bag and take home supplies to make soup.

"Being green together is a fun way to learn as a family while being kind to the environment," says a network spokesperson. Organizers urge people to bring their own shopping bags, commute together and learn about reusing items.

Numerous children and youth-based organizations have collaborated to bring this event to the public including PacificCare, Outreach Therapy, Island Health, Literacy Alberni, Alberni Valley Food Security Group, Alberni Valley Museum, City of Port Alberni Parks, Recreation and Culture, School District 70 Pacific Rim, PAACL, Pacific Rim Children and Families and the Vancouver Island Regional Library.

Family Literacy Day takes place Saturday, Feb. 1 from 10 a.m. to noon at Echo Centre, 4255 Wallace St.
