The Alberni Valley Tyee Club has a long history in Port Alberni.
The club was founded in 1932 with the goal of promoting sport fishing in the waters of the Alberni Inlet.
The annual Labour Day salmon derby in Port Alberni was originally a Tyee Club event. The first three-day derby started in 1939 at Port Alberni’s downtown waterfront, where Harbour Quays is now located. Today, the Labour Day salmon derby has morphed into a full festival, with musical entertainment, food vendors and other activities at the Port Alberni waterfront.
