Kolton Ivezich and Aanya Amber Gill of the Alberni Valley Track Club collected donations on Saturday, Jan. 4 for KidSport's "tree-cycling" fundraiser.

This year's "tree-cycling" fundraiser in Port Alberni raised more than $1,400 for KidSport.

Representatives from the Port Alberni Fire Department and local volunteers collected 117 old Christmas trees at the Echo Centre on Saturday, Jan. 4. The trees will be chipped and mulched into material that can be used in the park’s department’s composting program.

Trees were dropped off by donation to KidSport Port Alberni, which helps pay registration fees for youth unable to afford the cost of organized sports. This year, KidSport collected $1,444.85.

According to Willa Thorpe, director of KidSport Port Alberni, the largest total ever was in 2021, when volunteers collected 185 trees and $2,461.75.
