The Alberni Valley Photography Club was started in 2005 by Jim Swift, a teacher at the Port Alberni campus of North Island College.
He had a love of photography and found that there were others with a similar interest looking for an opportunity to share their knowledge with others. Together they started a club that continues today.
Membership has gone up and down over the years; currently there are 15 members and more are welcome. They meet twice a month, the second and fourth Wednesday at 7 p.m. between October and May at Abbeyfield House. Membership is $40 for the year, to cover the rental of their meeting location.
The group also takes one field trip a month, the first Sunday of the month. Most recently it was to French Creek where members found many interesting things to photograph, from seals, ducks, scenery, eagles, and so much more.
The next trip in February will be to Cathedral Grove on Sunday, Feb. 2, weather permitting. The usual time is 10 a.m. and members are free to walk on their own or with others to find those unique and illusive shots that are sure to please.
To be a member you do not have to have fancy equipment: nowadays cellphones take awesome shots. For more information, please call Steve or Lorna at 250-723-6901.
