The Royal Canadian Legion Br. 293 in Port Alberni had a sold-out crowd attend their fundraising dinner for Tour de Rock on Thursday, Sept. 27.
The riders were piped in by the West Coast Highlanders Pipe and Drums Band and saluted by Sergeant at Arms Tim Murphy as they entered the hall. It was the seventh day of their 14-day tour, which raises funds for children's cancer research and for Camp Goodtimes.
The pipe band entertained everyone before a tasty chicken cordon bleu buffet dinner. The meal was made by Wade Tourangeau and served by members.
Organizer of the meal, Jenny Neuwirth, wants to give a huge thank you to following local businesses for their overwhelming generosity in donating everything for the meal: Buy-Low Foods, Naesgaard’s Farm Market, No Frills, Quality Foods and Save On Foods. She also gives special thanks to her helpers, without whom she would never have been able to serve this dinner: Helen, Dale, Shirley, Shannon, Karen, Maryanne and Wade.
Warren Kongus had his mutton chops shaved by junior rider Ryker Dodding, 9. Nicholas Arnold of Vista Radio Station also went under the shears. The two shaves raised the total funds raised for Tour de Rock to more than $5,000. Money was also raised from the tickets for the dinner, from a monetary draw and from a silent auction organized by Sheila Aolick, with help from the generosity of local merchants.
Legion members would like to give a huge thank you to everyone that attended and made this year’s fundraiser another huge success.
